It was in 1774 - about the time of Admiral Lord Nelson - that the Royal Navy decided to change the design on the captains' uniforms throughout the fleet. They discarded the tudor rose emblem and replaced it with a symbolic anchor and cable. The crown was added to the uniform button in 1812, to distinguish Royal Navy personnel from those of the merchant navy, who by then had also adopted the anchor and cable design.

The crown and anchor style of the button has been favoured by seafarers for over 200 years. The Britannia button has been hand struck to commemorate almost 44 years of service by the Royal Yacht, which was launched by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Britannia had travelled more than one million miles by the time it was decommissioned at the end of 1997. This button is hand burnished and offered in silver and gilt finishes.
